Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer & Anne Barrows

Enjoyability: +++ (I don't give this out much)
Rating: A (there are swear words)

Have you ever read a book that was so good you tell yourself to stop at the end of every chapter, 'STOP' you say, Stop reading right now so you will have more to read later. You want to prolong your reading experience and not let it end so soon. But alas you are not strong enough and read on.... That was the experience I had with GLPPPS.

This was a first effort for the authoress, but I certainly hope its not her last. Although her niece helped her due to illnesses. There were so many poignant and beautiful parts to this book I found myself on the verge of tears more than once (many more than once) but I also found myself laughing out loud at different witty comments or eccentricities of the islanders. Sometimes I was laughing and crying at the same time, this was met by curious stares when I was reading in public places. The characters in this book were so charming and charismatic and eccentric I found myself through out the book saying 'I'm going to be like this person when I grow up' or 'I'm naming my first daughter/son after this character'.

You cant help but feel you've known these characters your whole life. And you want to know them for the rest of your life. I'm traveling to England this summer and I think Guernsey Island is going to be on my list of stops. This is one of those books that leave you wishing you were a part of the story and not just a reader.

I only hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
